Dividing The Earth

Q

The Bible mentions Peleg, son of Eber, saying that in his days the earth was divided. Is this the ground or the people? Thank You for your very blessed website.

A

You’re referring to Genesis 10:25:

Two sons were born to Eber: One was named Peleg, because in his time the earth was divided. And his brother’s name was Joktan.

The Hebrew word in question means earth or land. There is a sense in which it can also refer to the inhabitants of the land, but in 2,504 appearances, it’s never used this way in the Old Testament. It’s logical to assume that Genesis 10:25 is speaking of the division of the original single expanse of land into the continents of today. Peleg means division.
