Healing Prayers

Q

I came across a webpage last week which states if you suffer from certain ailments, you can pray to God using the psalms and the illnesses would heal. For example if you suffer from bad luck, you should pray the fourth psalm. If you have poor sight in your left eye, recital of the sixth psalm should cure it. I have even come across books which teach similar things, but they also say you should use candles anointed with oil. Isn’t this wrong? Shouldn’t you just pray to Jesus and have faith that He will heal whatever ailments you suffer from? Using candles and the psalms isn’t necessary, is it?

A

The Bible is not a book of magic where certain incantations will cure certain illnesses. If you’re looking for a formula for healing prayers, the Bible offers only one, and it’s in James 5:14-16.

Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.”
