Immanuel Or Jesus?

Q

When Mary was with child the angel said to call Him Immanuel. How did the name Jesus come about?

A

Matt. 1:23 is a quote from Isaiah 7:14 and says “And they will call Him Immanuel.” It’s a word that means “God with us” and is meant to describe who Jesus would be. But Luke 1:30-31 says the angel told Mary to name Him Jesus.

“But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.”

In the USA people call our leader “The President.” It tells everyone who he is. But his name is Barack Obama. In both these instances there’s no conflict between the two names.
