Interpreting John 16:8-11

Q

John 16:8-11 says the Holy Spirit convicts the world of sin, righteousness and judgement. Of sin, because they believe not in me (unbelief), of righteousness because I go to my father and you see me no more and of judgement because the ruler of the world is judged. So how does this relate to believers and unbelievers?

A

Jesus said the Holy Spirit will convict the world. In my opinion, this does not include believers. Although we are temporarily in the world, we are not of the world (John 18:36). In other words we don’t belong here.
He convicts the world of sin because they don’t believe in Him.

He convicts the world of righteousness because His going to the Father proves He will have paid the price for the world’s sins (John 1:29) and by rejecting Him they have refused the only way to righteousness (John 14:6).

And He convicts the world of judgment because the ruler of the world (Satan), with whom the world has sided, is judged and they will be judged with him (2 Thes. 2:9-12).
