Is Belief A Work?

Q

I watched a show where the preacher claimed the Bible says that belief is not going to get you saved and that belief is a work. How do we know we are saved? How do we know for sure we are doing God’s will and not being selfish? I am scared that I have missed out all these years. If believing is not part of “faith” then what is Faith?

A

Jesus said that whosoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)

And in Ephesians 1:13-14 Paul wrote;
And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession–to the praise of his glory.

In the Greek language the word for belief and the one for faith come from the same root, which means to trust in something. In Romans 4:5 Paul said, “to the man who does not work but trusts God who justifies the wicked, his faith is credited as righteousness.” This means faith (belief) is the only thing you can do that’s not counted as work.
