My regular Bible study this last Wednesday was run by someone other than our regular teacher. At one point in the discussion he stated that our sin, especially a willful sin, was subjecting Jesus to additional beatings and punishment. This didn’t seem right to me. What say you?
I say this is not correct. On the cross Jesus said, “It is finished” (John 19:30). The Greek word John used can also be translated “paid in full”. It means He had paid for all the sins of mankind (Colossians 2:13-14) that day. He would never endure any additional suffering on man’s behalf.
Also in Hebrews 10:12-14 we’re told that by His one sacrifice for sin He has made perfect forever those who are being made holy. According to Romans 7:14-20 God no longer counts our sins against us but attributes them to the sin nature that dwells within us. Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1).
