Lying To God

Q

I am trying to research the bible on a couple who deceived either God or Jesus concerning earned monies and their profit. Who was the couple and what is the bible reference?

A

I believe you’re referring to Ananias and Sapphira, a couple mentioned in Acts 5:1-11. They sold some property and gave part of the proceeds to help support the newly forming Church. But they claimed to have given all the proceeds. Peter told them that the property was theirs and they had a right to do anything they wanted with the money they had received, so why lie about it? He explained that they weren’t lying to men, but to God.

The problem was not that they kept part of the money, but that they thought they could lie about it, and be credited for more than they had done. But they stuck to their story, and God struck them dead for it.
