Q. It seems some end-times pundits are pondering the rash of animal deaths. They point to Hosea 4:3 and Zephaniah 1:3 with some speculation that God may be beginning His judgment on America. I have to admit that some of these do seem strange especially 200 cows in Wisconsin dying at about the same time. I respect your opinion and wonder if you’d be willing to add some thoughts regarding these scriptures?
A. We can certainly agree that the phrase “some speculation” is appropriate when citing these verses. Hosea 4:3 is specifically directed toward Israel, where no fish, bird or cow deaths have been reported. And Zephaniah 1:3 speaks of the devastating effects of the Great Tribulation (still some years away) and includes men along with animals, birds and fish.
As for this being the sign of a coming judgment on America, what about Canada, Japan, Italy, Sweden, and New Zealand where similar mass deaths have been reported among birds and/or fish?
Remember, we’re still in the early stages of “birth pangs” where the End Times judgments are concerned. And there’s nothing in the Bible to indicate these unexplained deaths are part of that scenario. Besides, if you’re looking for signs of impending judgment on America there are plenty of more obvious ones.
