The Great Falling Away

Q

In the end times, there’s supposed to be a great falling away. But I have no clue if it’s people of the Lord falling away, or just people in general not coming to the Lord. What do you think? What does scripture have to say? Thank you so much.

A

I believe that the great falling away, or apostasy, of 2 Thes. 2:3 is the departure of those who claim to be believers, but are not, from the true Gospel to a counterfeit one. I see this taking place in two ways today. This can be seen in the remarkable growth of the so-called emerging church movement, which emphasized a so-called social gospel over the true gospel.

Paul warned Timothy about this in such detail that is seems like he was really describing our times.

“The time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.” (2 Timothy 4:3-4)
