Violence And The Kingdom Of Heaven

Q

Do you have an opinion on Matt. 11:12? And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of Heaven is taken by violence, and the violent take it by force. (NKJV) I’ve heard it explained in various, even conflicting ways.

A

The Old King James has the most accurate translation of this verse, saying, And from the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of Heaven has suffered violence, and the violent take it by force.

I believe the Lord was talking about the violence that had led to John the Baptist’s arrest and would soon cause his execution, saying that the same thing would also happen to Him. He repeated this thought in Matt. 17:12-13. But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands.” Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John the Baptist.
