Why the mystery? Why is it important for man not to know about the day and the hour of Jesus’ return? Why the delay once the Sign is seen?

Four times in the span of 23 verses (Matt. 24:42 – Matt. 25:13) the Lord said those who are alive at the time of the second coming would not know the day or hour of His return. I believe the undefined delay just before the 2nd Coming will accomplish 2 things. First it will give those who are leaning toward accepting the Lord’s pardon for their sins but still haven’t done so one final chance to secure their destiny. Second it will lull those who have rejected His pardon into believing He’s not coming back. In other words both groups will use the time to solidify their own, opposite, positions.
