Why Was John on Patmos?

Q

What was the specific reason the Apostle John was sent to the island of Patmos? Was it because he accused the king of adultery? I get confused sometime between the Apostle John and John the Baptist. Thank you in advance for your clarification.

A

John the Baptist was executed after accusing Herod of marrying his brother’s wife. (It was true.) The Apostle John was exiled to the prison island of Patmos because he wouldn’t stop preaching the Gospel. According to tradition, he was sentenced to death by being thrown into a cauldron of boiling oil. When that didn’t harm him at all, he was sent to Patmos where there was no one to preach to. While there he was visited by the Lord who commanded him to write the book we know as The Revelation and then took him to the end of the age to witness all of it unfolding.
