Are There Other Gods?

Q

The 1st commandment says you shall not have any other Gods before him. Does that mean that there are other Gods but we should just not worship them. Me personally I only believe in the God that wrote the commandments. If our earth is only about 6,000 years old and God has been here forever what did he do before those 6,000 years? Thank you

A

Over and over in the Bible God has declared that He’s the only one. A good example is from Isaiah 44:6.

“This is what the LORD says– Israel’s King and Redeemer, the LORD Almighty: I am the first and I am the last; apart from me there is no God.”

All others who claim to be God are false gods, lifeless powerless idols that rebellious men have deified (Isaiah 46:5-7), or demons seeking worship (1 Cor. 10:19-20). We are not to worship any of these false gods instead of our God, the only real one.

We can tell He’s the real one because of all the things He has done to prove Himself to us. Chief among these has been telling His people what will happen in the future. In Isaiah 46:10 He said, “I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times what is still to come.” No other religion has a god who can do that and be right every time. Only our God can do that.

We don’t know very much about what went on before mankind came along. But we do know that God was around and so were His angels. We’ll learn all about what they did when we get to heaven. And we’ll find that the 6,000 years of mankind is only the blink of an eye compared to eternity.
