Binding The Strong Man?

Q

In Matthew 12:29 Jesus said we must first bind the strong man ( the devil ) then we can spoil his house. Does that mean we are to bind the devil also? I hear that in lots of churches ie: I bind you Satan in the name of Jesus. Can we bind him in the name of Jesus?

A

In Matt. 12:22-29 Jesus was responding to the Pharisees’ outrageous accusation that He was driving out demons by using Satan’s power. He used the example of needing to bind a strongman before you can rob his house to show how illogical their claim was. If he was receiving His power from Satan how could He to use that power to incapacitate Satan and work against him? I don’t see this as anything other than a hypothetical illustration.

In 1 John 4:4 we’re told that the One who is in us is greater than the one who is in the world. 2 Cor. 10:3-5, Ephes. 6:10-18, and James 4:7-8 show us the proper way to resist the devil and defeat his schemes. In my opinion, we don’t need all the theatrics that seem to be so prevalent in some parts of the church today.
