Blessed Are The Meek

Q

Matt. 5:5 says, “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” Do you know what Jesus meant by this verse?

A

The Greek word translated “meek” in Matt. 5:5 means gentleness of spirit. It’s the opposite of self-assertiveness or self-interest.

Meekness is an indication that we have yielded our life to the Lord as Paul admonished in Romans 12:1-2:

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.  Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

In Psalm 2:8 the Father offered the nations as the Son’s inheritance.

In Romans 8:16-17 Paul said the Spirit testifies that we are children of God and are His heirs, co-heirs with Christ. Therefore, having given up our self-centeredness and yielded our lives to God, we are “the meek” and being co-heirs with Christ we will inherit the earth with Him.
