Q. Is there any translation, Greek or Hebrew, that would show that Jesus ever referred to God as “Papa”? I have recently been told by a retired minister that Jesus called God “Papa”. He attends the church that I used to go to. This same minister is also telling me that “The Shack” is a good book, “good” theology. However, I had read an article on line that described this book as promoting false doctrine.
A. There’s no Biblical support for the claim that Jesus ever called God “Papa”. In Romans 8:15 and Galatians 4:6 Paul indicated we can call God “Abba” which is an Aramaic word for father that some people feel is more intimate that the Greek and Hebrew equivalents. Jesus used this term in Mark 14:36. Maybe that’s what your friend was referring to.
The Shack is a work of fiction. As such it can be an uplifting, even inspiring, story. But it’s not something upon which we can build a theological position.
