Does Damascus Have To Be Destroyed?

Q

In regards to Isaiah 17 and the destruction of Damascus, does all of Damascus have to be destroyed? With all the fighting, destruction, and death in Syria right now could that be what was meant by the “destruction of Damascus”? I am wondering if it can be greatly damaged due to this current war or if it as to be totally destroyed to fit the Isaiah 17 prophecy.

A

Isaiah 17:1 says, “See, Damascus will no longer be a city but will become a heap of ruins.” This sounds to me like a total destruction. It has been reported that Syria is considering a general call up of reserve troops to be ready in case the current situation involving Turkey erupts into a full scale war. (Turkey has been firing artillery shells into Syria for over a week after a Syrian attack damaged a Turkish town.) Between that and the internal strife the country is experiencing US intelligence estimates indicate the government of Pres. Assad can survive for no more than six months before falling. Whether this will result in the fulfillment of Isaiah 17 is still not clear.
