Finding The Right Job

My whole life, until 2010, God was faithful in giving me jobs wherever we went, even though I wasn’t as close to Him as I am now. Lately it has been a series of layoffs. I am a good worker and have never been let go for not doing a good job. I prayed and prayed and found a job in a field I had previously been in for many years. I was let go yesterday due to “not being a good fit” for the position. What am I doing wrong? I don’t know how to discern whether a job I get is from God or simply that I jumped the gun and took one I shouldn’t have taken. Are we made to pay the rest of our lives for a bad decision made at a certain point in our lives?

I don’t know what you mean by paying for the rest of your life for a bad decision, but I do know that’s not the Lord’s way. His mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23) and as soon as we confess our sins He forgives us and purifies us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). After that it’s like it never happened.

The way to be sure a job is from God is to pray for one that will meet your needs. Then go out and start looking, asking Him to lead you to the right one. While you’re looking, stay in prayer, thanking Him for every opportunity. Keep asking Him to take you to the right one, the one He wants you to have. When you find the job He’s led you to, you’ll know. Be sure to thank Him for bringing you to it. Then work at it like you’re working for Him (Colossians 3:23-24).
