Yes, I do see a definite connection and it could be a partial fulfillment of Obadiah 1:15 which reads,
“The day of the LORD is near for all nations. As you have done, it will be done to you; your deeds will return upon your own head.”
The ultimate fulfillment will come in the Great Tribulation when God will completely destroy all the nations among which the Jews have been scattered. (Jeremiah 30:11)
