Heaven And Earth Burned Up?

Q

Re: II Peter 3:10. Will that be a literal fire burning heaven and earth? I believe we will have a new heaven and earth, but I thought the earth would just be repaired. I know that I have read that verse many times, but had it hit me in the face so to speak the other night.

2 Peter 3:10 reads as follows; But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare (or burned up KJV).

Peter tended to use the phrase “Day of the Lord” in its widest possible application. For example, in Acts 2:16-21 he used a prophecy that describes the Great Tribulation (Joel 2:28-32) to explain why the disciples were speaking in tongues at Pentecost. By doing so he was including the entire Church Age in his definition of the phrase.

Similarly, I think 2 Peter 3:10 will be fulfilled at the end of the Millennium when we’re about to enter eternity. There doesn’t seem to be any provision for completely destroying Heaven and Earth at the time of the 2nd Coming.
