Q. I feel the Lord calling me to fast. I have prayed about it and am reading “God’s Chosen Fast.” Is it legitimate before God to fast and still drink vegetable juice and tea but have no solid foods?
A. I read that book before my first fast, and have referred to it several times since. It’s a good one. Be sure to follow its instructions in preparing yourself.
A fast can consist of any food you choose to forego, from “choice food, meat, and wine” like Daniel did (Daniel 10:2-3) to a full abstinence from any food at all. On the Day of Atonement some Orthodox Jews have neither food nor drink of any kind for 24 hours.
