Saving For Retirement

Q

I have been struggling lately with different life options and find myself thinking, “I won’t be here much longer anyway, what is the point?” One area in particular that has been on my mind is investing for retirement. I know that I have a responsibility to be a good steward of my finances, but I can’t help think that reducing my investments and using the money that has been freed up toward the Kingdom would be a better idea. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

The best counsel I can give you comes from the Lord Himself

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matt. 6:19-21)

I personally believe that a day is coming soon when those who’ve built up huge retirement accounts will discover that those accounts are next to worthless because of changes in currency values, inflation, etc. I also agree with you that there’s a good chance most Christians alive today will not be spending their retirement on Earth. It’s time for us all to develop an eternal perspective and begin seriously applying the Lord’s advice about storing up treasure in Heaven.

But please don’t do anything on my say so. Pray about this and don’t act until you’re sure the Lord is directing you.
