Understanding Amos 3:7

Q

Re: Amos 3:7. “Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.” I think I understand this scripture, but I’m not too sure how to explain it. Help, please.

A

It means that God will not undertake any action toward mankind that He hasn’t already revealed through those He has appointed as prophets. This would include the prophets of the Old Testament and Jesus, who He appointed as the prophet for the last days (Hebrews 1:1-2).

Being appointed by God to the office of prophet, authorized to speak to the people on His behalf about the future, is not the same as being given the spiritual gift of prophecy which only empowers the recipient to provide additional detail for things already revealed in a general way in the Word of God.
