Q. My wife and I understand clearly that our safety is solely in the capable hands of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Our question concerns home security and surveillance devices installed to dissuade would be perpetrators from choosing our home as a target. Also, as we live in south Florida and are permitted to carry a concealed weapon. We often wonder how the Lord feels about all this.
A. Romans 12:18 says if it’s possible, as far as it depends on us, we should live in peace with everyone, but it doesn’t say we can’t be ready to defend ourselves if attacked. The saying that he who lives by the sword will die by the sword is a misquote of Matt. 26:52 where Jesus said, “All who draw the sword will die by the sword” and wasn’t meant as a general admonition. He was reminding the disciples that a contingent of armed Temple officers was there to arrest Him and if the disciples tried to defend Him the much larger group of professional soldiers would make short work of them all.
