Q. I have a question which I have always wondered about. When the woman caught in adultery was about to be stoned, the Bible says that Jesus wrote something in the dirt. What was it that he wrote, and why did He do that? Thank you very much for your answer to this question and to all the other questions that you have answered for me and so many others through your daily posts.
A. The Bible doesn’t say what He wrote, nor is it recorded in history. But from the reaction of the men preparing to stone the woman, some scholars have speculated that Jesus was writing the secret sin of which each man was most ashamed. What ever it was, it caused the men to lose heart for the execution, which in any case would have been illegal under Roman law, since the Jews had lost the right to inflict capital punishment.
