Where Was Mary Buried?

Q

First of all I just love your site. I visit it it everyday. It has helped me a lot. One question that I’ve been having a hard time with is where are the Virgin Mary’s remains? Some say that they can not be found because she was ascended into heaven. I just need to know what the Bible says, if anything about this view as well as your views.

A

While it’s safe to assume that Mary’s spirit went to heaven when she died, there’s no reason to believe her body accompanied her. A mortal body cannot attain immortality (1 Cor. 15:50-53). There are two locations claiming to be the site of her grave. By far the most popular one is in Jerusalem at the foot of the Mt. of Olives just outside the garden of Gethsemane.

There is also a beautiful park known as the House of the Virgin Mary in Ephesus that many believe to be the place of her burial. This claim arose out of John’s agreement to look after Mary when the Lord died and since John spent a part of his later life there, it would be logical to assume Mary went with him.

I’ve visited both places and found no incontrovertible proof in either. The Bible is silent on Mary’s death and the location of her remains, but there are over 50 accounts of her death in various apocryphal books. As you might imagine they differ in their conclusions.
