40 Days of Prayer 2024: Day 19

Today, we are on Day 19, and we continue our time on the practice of Scripture.

(You can catch up on Day 1, Day 2 , Day 3, Day 4, Day 5, Day 6, Day 7, Day 8, and Day 9, Day 10, Day 11, Day 12, Day 15, Day 17 Day 18 if you missed them)

We continue to spend time in the Bible, slowing down and spending time with God in each passage. Today, we’ll read Psalm 3. Again, if the Lord directs you to another passage in the Bible, follow His prompting.

Read Psalm 3 slowly once altogether. Note or underline any words the Spirit highlights for you. Have a notebook with you to write down anything that comes to mind as you read. What does the Lord have for you today in this passage?

Psalm 3

A psalm of David, regarding the time David fled from his son Absalom.

O Lord, I have so many enemies;
    so many are against me.
So many are saying,
    “God will never rescue him!”             Selah

But you, O Lord, are a shield around me;
    you are my glory, the one who holds my head high.
I cried out to the Lord,
    and he answered me from his holy mountain.       Selah

I lay down and slept,
    yet I woke up in safety,
    for the Lord was watching over me.
I am not afraid of ten thousand enemies
    who surround me on every side.

Arise, O Lord!
Rescue me, my God!
Slap all my enemies in the face!
Shatter the teeth of the wicked!
Victory comes from you, O Lord.
May you bless your people.           Selah

Look at the words or phrases the Holy Spirit highlighted on our first read-through. Listening to the Lord may be a new practice for you, but it is essential. You need to hear from God. Sit in His presence, with your heart open to His promptings. Write down anything that comes to mind.

Now, we read it again, slowly. Continue to ask God to speak to you through His word. You can pause on the words God is highlighting for you, and write down any promptings the Lord brings to your heart.

Read it once more, and continue, being still, in His presence. Wait patiently for Him, feast on these words. What is God saying to you today? Is there encouragement in the passage? Is there a prompting to adjust anything in your heart or in your life? Write down anything you sense the Lord is saying, and write down the parts that He highlighted for you.

Father, we thank you for this time together in your word. Bind the work of the deceiver, our enemy, in the lives of each person here, Lord. Open each heart to hear you, confirm with your Spirit your voice and your promptings. You are a shield around us, the one who lifts our heads. Because of you we can lie down in safety, for you watch over us.
