Dominion Over Earth

Q

What scripture references explain the dominion over this planet? I understand that Adam forfeited the dominion when he sinned to Satan. Is that correct?

A

According to Genesis 1:28 Adam was given dominion over Earth. 1 John 5:19 says the whole world is now under the control of the evil one. The conclusion is that Satan was able to steal it from Adam as a consequence of his sin. This explains why there’s so much evil in the world.

Jesus in effect confirmed this in the temptation wilderness. He didn’t dispute Satan’s claim that all the Kingdoms of the world are his, but refused to worship him none the less.

The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. So if you worship me it will all be yours” (Luke 4:5-6).

Technically Jesus redeemed the creation at the cross (Romans 8:19-22), but will not take possession of Earth until the 2nd coming (Zechariah 14:9) after He takes the Church to our heavenly home. In the mean time Satan’s in control here, but he’s limited by the restraining power of the Holy Spirit (2 Thes. 2:7). Jesus called Satan the prince of this world (John 12:31, 14:30, 16:11) and Paul said he’s the god of this age (2 Cor. 4:4).

But that doesn’t mean we have to fear Him. John said the One who is in us is greater than the one who is in the world (1 John 4:4) and James said, “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you (James 4:7).
