Explaining Ezekiel 31

Q

Can you explain Ezekiel 31? Who is the Assyrian? And why is he compared to a tree in the garden of Eden?

A

In Ezekiel 31 the Lord was reminding Egypt that Assyria (not the Assyrian) was a like great Cedar in Lebanon, as beautiful and powerful as any of those in Eden. But it was cut down by the Ruler of the Nations (Babylon) Egypt would be cut down in the same way.

In 609 Egypt came to Assyria’s aid against Babylon and in 605 was defeated along with Assyria in the Battle of Carchemish. A few years later Egypt was given to Bablyon along with every other country in the Middle East. This is one of 7 laments Ezekiel was told to give against Egypt.
