I’ve been a born-again Christian for about 35 years and had the assurance of salvation. A few years after being saved, I was in bed with a married man having sex and had the experience of feeling a fluttering of a bird (Dove – representing the Holy Spirit) leaving my heart and flying away. Then about a year ago I had a very disturbing dream in which I realized I was in Hell, a hopeless, forlorn place. I started shouting “WHY AM I HERE? After a long silence, I heard the words “You are thinking wrong.” Is this the Lord telling me I’m going to Hell?
If you are truly saved the Holy Spirit was sealed within you as a deposit guaranteeing your inheritance (Ephes. 1:13-14) until the day of redemption (Ephes. 4:30) . If you weren’t saved the Holy Spirit couldn’t have been with you in the first place. So either way, what you experienced couldn’t have been the Holy Spirit departing. It was more likely a figment of your imagination caused by your guilt.
As for your recent dream, the same is true. If you are truly saved you couldn’t be in Hell. The voice you heard saying you are thinking wrong was trying to get you to understand that. Born again Christians will not, cannot, ever go to Hell.
Ask the Lord to forgive you for all your sins (1 John 1:9). James 4:7-8 says to resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.
