This week in Mexico 7-10-26

Here’s a glimpse of our week of outreaches in Mexico.

Happy Friday GTF fam! :hearts: It’s officially summer in Mexico! The kids are on summer break, and we’re excited to fill their vacation time with loads of fun. Our project with Menita is going along quickly! And we brought groceries to families in need. I’m so excited to share our outreach pics from Mexico with you!

Our house project – Menita

Our Pastora sends me prayer requests for our community, and when she asked for prayer for Menita after a fall, I thought this was a request we already knew about. But then she told me that Menita had hurt her wrist and head when she fell, and I realized this was a new fall! It turns out Menita was trying to help clean up some rocks for the workers, and she fell hard.

We had thought she was just sleeping in that day when we didn’t see her early, but she had been at the hospital. She came back with a cast on her wrist and a wound on her head. And strict instructions to let the workers do the work. Please pray with us for her recovery.

Building a ramp: prepping for concrete

After clearing and leveling the path, we cut plywood strips to create the form, laid down a bed of gravel, and then wire mesh. (You can see our last update if you need to catch up!)

Concrete Pour

Now that the prep work is done, it’s time to pour the concrete!

Ramp Finished

Menita was so excited, she began walking on the ramp as soon as it was barely dry!

Now that the ramp is poured, Aidan can begin building the railings. But first, we need him to weld a grate at the top of the ramp so rain doesn’t pour down it in the winter. In the pic below, you can see we poured a small concrete channel between the road and the ramp, and we’ll then place the grate on top to connect the two. And since Aidan is welding it, we can make it so that Menita can cross it safely and easily with her cane.

Project Menita – Bathroom add on!

We shared about this potential add-on last time, and as we were figuring out the best solution, God provided! He takes such good care of widows. ♥ In our last update, we were looking at the best way to help her, and then we noticed there was no drain in her shower. The water was pooling on the concrete, causing mold and stability issues, as it seeped down through the concrete into the dirt below.

It’s usually cheaper to start fresh than to tear down and try to fix something old. And because of the floor issues, our guys didn’t want to even attempt to fix that shower where it is until it’s had plenty of time to dry out. So, we are building her a small bathroom off her bedroom!

By the time our guys drew up plans to figure out the cheapest way possible to help her, the Lord had already provided for it!

Pouring the new bathroom floor

This is the other door into Menita’s room. We are going to open up the area around the window in the pic below to create the bathroom entrance.

Raising the walls

We don’t have space for concrete block walls here, so wood was the only option. Wood framing is so much fun because it goes up so quickly!

Adding the roof

Between the wood construction and the very small size, this will be one of our quickest builds!

Our kids’ group – Escuelita

It’s summer! When we asked the kids what the most important activities for their summer would be, they said they want lots of coloring and crafts, group Bible stories (they’ve asked for treats to encourage some of them who have been too shy to read, which is adorable), and activities at the park.

We haven’t been to the park for a bit. We’ve had some problems with the dogs of one of the families who lives next to the park. So we asked them to get them corralled before we bring the whole group back, and hopefully that will be next week!
