What Does Simon Mean?

Q

I know that Jesus changed the apostle Simon’s name to Peter which means “rock”, but what does the name Simon mean? I tried looking on the internet, but came up with all kinds of different results.

The Doctrine Of Non-Accumulation

Published: July 1, 2024
Q

I am trying to locate some information concerning a book a work colleague gave me to read regarding earthly wealth and possessions. This book espouses a “doctrine of non-accumulation” concerning Christians owning earthly possessions.

As for myself, I have very little in this world. I do not own a home, nor do I have investments etc… but I am also not in any debt, and I tithe faithfully every week (cheerfully I might add). The one “worldly” thing I do own is a boat, and it is the only thing that I enjoy besides Christ and Church (call it my tinker-toy). I think my colleague believes that I shouldn’t own this “luxury” item either, and that I should sell it and give the proceeds away (which I believe to be his reasoning for giving me the book).

What Did Paul Mean In 1 Thes. 4:3-6?

Published: July 1, 2024
Q

In 1 Thess. 4, it says let each man find a wife in a way that is holy and honorable. What does he mean let no one take advantage of him in this process? Is it referring to cheating him like Laban did Jacob? Is it adultery or fornication? Or could it be referring to everything?

Works And Fruit

Q

After you are saved and when the Bible refers to works, what “works” is talking about? Is it just reading your bible, praying, going to church, or is it like being a witness or doing something kind for others? And then what is “fruit”? Is it the fruit of the spirit?

Understanding 2 Thes. 2:7

Q

I used to hold to the pre-trib position simply because I was taught it and given a few “fine threads” of “evidence?” After wiping the slate clean and letting Scripture speak, I have come to the conclusion that there are too many problems and passages I can’t explain if I hold to that view. For example, I was taught that 2 Thessalonians 2:7 which is often used to “prove” the rapture since “the one restraining is taken away” must be the rapture of the church. The problem with that is the verb translated “taken away” doesn’t mean that at all, it’s the verb ginomai which is never translated “taken away”. It always refers to birth, or coming into existence. What do you say in response to this?

Bearing Fruit

Published: June 28, 2024
Q

I have a question for you regarding ‘the fruit of the Spirit’. Jesus said we would recognize Christians in the same way as we would recognize a good tree – because it bears good fruit. As Christians though, we continue to sin and constantly bear ‘bad fruit’ – easily recognizable by our un-Christlike behavior. Does this mean that we are not truly saved or born of the Spirit?

The Parable Of The Sower

You may have answered this before, but would you explain the parable of the Sower, in relation to OSAS?

Members Of One Body

Published: June 27, 2024
Q

Throughout my life as a Christian, I was always taught that the Body of Christ was made up of all born-again believers. But lately, I’ve been hearing some pastors are teaching that the Body of Christ refers only to members of a local church. I’ve read the scriptures they use to justify this teaching, for example 1 Corinthians 12:27: “Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.” I’m confused and upset, since I’m disabled and can rarely attend church. I would greatly appreciate any insight you can provide.

Keeping The Feasts Of Israel

Published: June 27, 2024
Q

My dear friend has a daughter who is now deciding that she will observe the Old Testament feasts and dietary laws and teach her children to do the same. This is causing some concern for my friend over her daughter’s and grandchildren’s salvation. I do not know if her daughter has ever accepted Christ as Savior. As I understand, her daughter was raised a Protestant, but now seems to be doing some Spiritual exploration. What advice do you have for my dear Evangelical friend?

Parable Of The Sower. Follow Up

Published: June 26, 2024
Q

From the Parable of the Sower, is being fruitful referring to the nine Spiritual fruits born in our character? Do ‘deeds’ or ‘good works’ then have to follow ‘fruits’? At the believers’ judgment for rewards, will our Lord judge us on works or fruits or are they both the same thing? Thanks for your help.
