Interpreting Romans 8:28

Published: August 10, 2020 (Originally published: October 24, 2013)

I was reading a devotional and something this author wrote has disturbed me. Speaking of Romans 8:28 he said, “God promises that he will work out everything to our good, and the good of others, as long as we obey Him”.

As far as I know this Scripture reads this way: “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”

I do realize that if someone loves God they are going to make every attempt to obey Him except that I know there are so many many times I do not obey God even though I always want to. So am I to believe that God is not going to work everything to my good because I’m sometimes disobedient?

You have rejected us, O God, and burst forth upon us; you have been angry-now restore us! You have shaken the land and torn it open; mend its fractures, for it is quaking. You have shown your people desperate times; you have given us wine that makes us stagger.

Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer. From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe. I long to dwell in your tent forever and take refuge in the shelter of your wings.

Tithing Follow Up

Published: August 11, 2020 (Originally published: August 26, 2006)

Just in regards to the recent question on tithing…what happens if we don’t go to church? Usually the money would be given during the church service – but for Christians such as myself who don’t actually attend a church regularly, where should we send our money?

I’ve been thinking of maybe keeping the money aside for people in need (such as Christian charities/organizations, sponsoring children in poverty etc), but is this the way God’s portion should be spent? Or should I somehow keep it aside to offer to the Lord personally? I hope this makes sense!!

New Testament Restoration

Published: August 11, 2020 (Originally published: November 7, 2008)

Our friends recently cut all ties with us when we did not attend a New Testament Restoration Meeting. One of the topics was celebrating the Lord’s Supper as a full meal every Sunday. We are not convinced that the Lord’s supper must be a full meal, celebrated weekly. With the emphasis on ‘must be’. The full meal part is a concern because the preparation and menu have the potential of distracting from the remembrance of all that Jesus did for us. We are startled to think that our friendship has been destroyed over this topic. Any thoughts?
